URGENT: Let’s defeat the Convention of States TODAY (Virginia)

There are two bills in the Virginia Senate calling for a convention of States. We must stop these bills today! Please read the details below and call your Senators today- tell them NO Convention of States!

SJ 232 (BBA CON) & SJ 312 (COS) in Senate Rules Committee. Meets after Senate adjourns early afternoon, Feb 2.

Please help by sending emails / making calls this morning! See the email block, phone numbers and Talking Points below.

Put the bill numbers in the title of the email (with Vote NO or Oppose SJ 232 & SJ 312 ). The body of the email could simply say “Please do not report these bills to the floor. An Article V convention at this time in our history would be far too risky.”

If they ask if you are a constituent, say this is a national issue, not a constituent issue.

Copy and paste to email them all:

Possible Talking Points:

Article V is one short paragraph in our U.S. Constitution!

It does not state voting takes place by state. Even Rob Natelson, COS’ legal expert, states the convention chooses manner of voting. (ALEC Handbook)

It does not state how delegates would be selected.

It does not state that the Convention can be limited to one subject.

It does not say states can restrain delegates in any way.

It does not state that only 13 state houses can stop ratification of a bad amendment. Congress could choose “conventions” (which could be rigged) to ratify amendments.

It does not state that Congress can only set a date, time and place for a convention.  Article V gives CONGRESS, not the states, the power to “call the convention.”  Are you aware of any entity which “calls” a convention and does not also set rules, choose officers, establish credentials, agenda, procedures, etc.?

It does not state that the convention would be a “convention of states.” All Article V says is that CONGRESS shall call a convention if two-thirds of the States “apply.”
