Mysterious Forces Walk Among Us

In June, 1979, a man walked into the office of Elberton Granite Finishing Company, in Elberton, Georgia, wanting to know the cost of building a large monument dedicated to conservation. The man identified himself only as “Mr. Christian.” Once the details were worked out, the man presented plans from an unknown group of sponsors. So precise were the specifications for the monument that they had to be carried out by experts in stone and construction.

When finished, the monument was a gargantuan, six-piece, 19 foot high monument composed of “Pyramid Blue Granite.” Like England’s mysterious Stonehenge, the monument was calibrated to exact astronomical calibrations. The four large upright blocks pointing outward are oriented to the limits of the migration of the Moon. The North Star is always visible through an oblique hole drilled into the center. A slot is cut in the middle of the “Gnomen” stone to form a window which aligns with the positions of the rising sun at the Summer and Winter Solstices and the Equinox so that the sun shines to indicate noon on a curved line. Another 7/8 inch hole captures the sun to create a kind of calendar that tells the day of the year as the sun beam shines on the stones.

The four huge granite slabs bear a message to the world written in 12 languages: Sanskrit, Babylonian, Cuneiform, Egyptian Hieroglyphics, Classical Greek, English, Russian, Hebrew, Arabic, Hindi, Chinese, Spanish and Swahili. On both sides of each slab are recorded the following ten commands:

1 Maintain humanity under 500,000,000 in perpetual balance with nature.

2 Guide reproduction wisely – improving fitness and diversity.

3 Unite Humanity with a living new language.

4 Rule Passion – Faith – Tradition – and all things with tempered reason.

5 Protect People and nations with fair laws and just courts.

6 Let all nations rule internally resolving external disputes in a world court.

7 Avoid petty laws and useless officials.

8 Balance personal rights with social duties.

9 Prize truth – beauty – love – seeking harmony with the infinite.

10 Be not a cancer on the earth – leave room for nature – leave room for nature.

The command for a world court, massively reduced populations and the reference to humans as a “cancer on the earth” are all common tenets of the radical environmental movement and the United Nations. But the monument was conceived and built years before any of the commands found their way into our way of life. Now most are common positions of government policy.

Who went to all the trouble to put these ideas in stone on a rural hilltop in Georgia twenty years ago? No one has a clue. Once finished, all bank and construction plans for the monument were turned back to the mysterious Mr. Christian. No one has ever known who designed, financed or ordered the building of the “Georgia Guidestones.”

Special thanks to R.E. Sutherland
